Project Overview
As part of an MTA accessibility upgrade contract, the 181st Street Station was upgraded with 2 brand new elevators and modernization effort aimed at improving accessibility, reliability, and passenger safety.
MKJ was brought in to equip these newly installed elevators with a fully IP-based camera-intercom network, expand the station’s existing PSLAN network and perform necessary upgrades to existing CCTV and Agent Booth equipment – providing the latest tech in elevator intercom operations for a safer environment to the passengers. Working with longtime partners MLJTC2 helped us to exceed goals and expectations on this project.
THE CHALLENGE
Complete a high-stakes system cutover in an active high profile and high traffic station environment—fast, clean, and without customer complaints.
- Provide new IP-based camera/intercom infrastructure tied to newly installed elevator operations
- A live subway station with constant passenger flow including high position MTA employees
- Tight coordination required with New York City Transit Security and the New York City Police Department
RESULTS & IMPACT
- Delivered ahead of schedule
Elevator intercoms placed into service 2 days before scheduled elevator opening.
- Rapid PSLAN network adaptation
Major last-minute design changes required a complete PSLAN reconfiguration, executed on the fly with no impact to testing or system performance.
- Out-of-scope integration completed
New elevator intercoms successfully tied into the existing Agent Booth phone system, ensuring seamless communication without additional delays.
- Reliable system delivery
Zero unplanned outages during installation and testing, with minimal passenger impact throughout deployment.
- Full accessibility milestone
Completion of work at 181st Street station helped make the station fully ADA accessible. The community was grateful.
- 15 elevators have now been completed under the contract.
