As Mother’s Day approaches and the 14th anniversary of MKJ directly follows, I can’t help but think, “If not for my mom, industry legend and leader Carol Kleinberg, where would I be?!”
As the original working-mom, this woman has led by example – entering the room with her beautiful smile and slaying the masses with her intellect and willingness to move mountains to get ‘it’ done, no matter what ‘it’ was.
In the late 1970’s the economy was in peril – my father was a furloughed electrician and my mom the consummate salesperson sold his skills and so began Kleinberg Electric. When I speak to my staff about being a family business it is because from my perspective, having worked in a variety of business models it’s truly is best kind. When you work for or with a family owned and operated entity you matter, your family matters, your future matters. My siblings and I have been estimating and project managing our entire lives – there was never a time that Carol didn’t have us working (weeding, waitressing, bagging groceries) and as we’d walk in the door from a day’s work she would let us know how proud she was of our effort – instilling in us a work ethic that remains with Monica (the M) who owns a hair salon, Kory (the K) who is the future of KEI, and me (the J) today.
My mom showed me time and again that her female-ness was not a barrier. Of course in a male-dominated industry it was, and still is, an obstacle – but never an excuse to fail. Thank you Big Momma, for giving me the platform, for lifting me and countless other females in the construction industry, and beyond, higher than we could have dreamed for ourselves.
Carol Kleinberg, you are fearless, you are tireless, and you are a maverick on this and every Mother’s Day.
I truly celebrate the ceiling you shattered and the light you have brought to the NYC construction industry, your staff, my staff, our family, and to me.
